How to build your own layering system
At Montane, we design and build our garments to work together as part of an adaptable layering system that keeps you warm, dry, protected and comfortable in any weather conditions, and at any altitude, from the valley floor to the summit of the mountain.
Here are the basics that you need to know to build your own layering system for different conditions and activities, by selecting high-performance, fast and light products that help you to move efficiently and achieve your goals, or simply enjoy being immersed in the outdoors.
How does the layering system work?
- Baselayer - A base layer is a moisture-wicking and insulating layer worn closest to the skin to regulate body temperature and keep you dry.
- Midlayer - A midlayer is an insulating layer worn over the base layer and under the outer shell to provide warmth by trapping body heat while allowing moisture to escape.
- Outerlayer - An outer layer, also known as a shell layer, is the protective outermost layer in outdoor gear designed to shield against wind, rain, and snow while allowing moisture from inner layers to escape.
