PERTEX® QUANTUM

Windproof, soft to the touch and 100% recycled. PERTEX® QUANTUM is constructed in a tightly woven structure to provide windproof protection and trap still air inside the smock.The fabric is lightweight, packable and soft to the touch. Finished with a non-fluorocarbon water repellent which allows the fabric to shed light rain and snow, allowing the smock to provide weather protection in adverse conditions.The fabric is constructed using highly abrasion resistant nylon ripstop, incorporating reinforcement yarns to provide durable resistance to tearing, helping the fabric to withstand harsh mountain environments.

  • What has changed with the updated version of the Extreme?

    The Extreme range has been updated to feature a 100% recycled outer fabric. The Montane logo has been updated to a solid colour. There have been slight adjustments to the seams for a better fit and increased durability. The elbow area has been reduced in size for a neater fit. On the Extreme Smock the removable crotch strap is no longer a feature.

    Nice jacket, not long enough for me

    I bought this to replace my Buffalo Special 6 Shirt which is a beast, but the lack of hood bothered me. Was ecstatic to see they'd released this.

    I’m 6’4” and the XL fits me perfectly everywhere — shoulders, arms, chest and overall volume are spot on but unfortunately the body length at the front is just too short for me and I’d expected a bit more coverage given the intended mountain use, but it sits higher than I’m comfortable with and leaves my lower layers exposed more than I’d like, especially if I was in cold or windy conditions.

    I don’t think this is a fault as such - it seems to be a design choice - but it does mean that if you’re tall and prefer a bit more length in an outer layer, it’s something to be aware of. It’s a real shame because otherwise it’s very close to perfect.

    Indestructible Winter Top

    The Montane Extreme Smock has been my go-to top for winter climbing ever since I bought it in 2019. It is warm - very warm in fact - but can be vented thanks to the side zips. This allows for a strenuous approach. Closing the zips reduces heat loss whilst belaying. This flexibility of temperature control in this single item of clothing means you don’t have the inconvenience if adding or removing additional layers which inevitably also entails taking off your rucksack and having to put it back on again. On the very coldest of days, I do carry a synthetic insulating jacket as well in case I am inactive for a prolonged time. For example, making a brew on a summit of a Scottish winter mountain before descending. But generally, this extra layer is not required even in very cold conditions. The hood is very good too and can be removed easily if not needed. I don’t use it often but I leave it attached for those occasions when I’m belaying on a cold and exposed ledge and an icy breeze or squall needs to be kept at bay.

    The smock keeps the wind out and light rain is no problem. Heavy rain is a different matter. But even when soaked through from a heavy deliver, the smock retains warmth and remains comfortable.

    What is also impressive is the smock’s resilience. After seven years of winter climbing and scrambling my smock is still in ‘almost new’ condition. The reinforced elbows are great and have helped enormously. The large chest pocket is easy to access and holds most of what you…

    First and last and always

    I am delighted to see the Montane Extreme smock back in production within the current range. This is one helluva piece of kit which I can thoroughly recommend. I am based in the Cairngorms and this garment is ideally suited for our local microclimate in winter. Whether walking my dog by the River Spey , cross country skiing or hiking over the sub arctic plateau the smock can handle it all. Great to see the new updates too. Grab one while you can you will not regret it!
