Construction
80 Denier GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology across the shoulders, hips and elbows
Material
Our most durable GORE-TEX shell
The most robust waterproof technology used in our range, GORE-TEX Pro provides the highest levels of durability, waterproof performance and windproof protection. Designed specifically for the most extreme environments, GORE-TEX Pro will provide weatherproof protection in the harshest of snow conditions or the wettest of downpours. Utilising a high strength 3-layer construction and high denier fabrics ensures the fabric provides long-lasting durable protection with high abrasion- and snag-resistance, perfect for climbing, mountaineering and ice climbing. Extremely breathable, the fabric manages moisture to reduce a build-up of perspiration, regulating your body temperature and keeping you comfortable when you're working hard. Being totally windproof ensures your insulating layers can retain their warmth for longer, allowing your entire layering system to perform better. A specially woven highly breathable lining on the inside of the fabric protects the membrane and allows the fabric to easily move over layers, ensuring you can move freely and without hindrance.
Built for expedition
The Phase XPD has been designed for extreme mountaineering and ski touring expeditions. An extremely durable 80D fabric has been used in key areas across the shoulders, hips and elbows, providing the most rugged protection where you need it most. Using this high denier fabric in these key areas ensures maximum weatherproof and abrasion resistant performance when you are wearing a rucksack or harness, while the 40D fabric in the rest of the jacket reduces weight and maximises breathability while still being incredibly robust. A helmet compatible hood provides ample space and adjustment for wearing over a helmet. A 2-way zip allows the jacket to be worn with a harness for belaying. Underarm pit zips allow for ventilation and increased air flow without having to remove your jacket. The Phase XPD has a "Expedition Fit" which means it is cut specifically to allow for the wearing of additional insulating layers beneath the jacket, perfect for the coldest mountain environments.

Finally I had the opportunity to try out this jacket in its proper environment, ie Scottish winter. Three days of wind, rain, hail, sleet and snow at various times and for long periods, including blizzard conditions and -8c wind chill. Also had some high abrasion moments when scrambling over mixed ground. In brief, the jacket was faultless. I rarely needed more than the jacket and a winter base layer, and when I did need more, a Montane gridded fleece sufficed.
To the detail. The weight is brilliant & does not comprise the jacket’s ability to cope with harsh winter conditions. The sleeve cuffs easily pull over thick winter gloves & synch down securely and comfortably. The hood is a great fit (and particularly well-fitting over a helmet). The length of the jacket at the chin keeps out the elements and likewise at the hem to allow you to put on crampons without it riding up over your hips. The sleeves stayed put when reaching up for holds. Pit zips work easily and were a boon when working hard in ascent. I couldn’t fault the jacket & after almost 9 hours yesterday in full winter conditions my base layer was totally dry.
One point worth mentioning is the 3 outer pockets are not watertight (& not claimed to be) so be aware when stowing items on very wet days.
Overall I give it the 5 stars it richly deserves. I purchased mine through Montane’s excellent Professionals deal - a big benefit of being a member of my professional association, making the value unmatchable.

Wore this on the Winter Spine and it was bomb proof. Didn't need it to keep me dry, but it kept me toasty warm in the winds.
